Born in Montreal, Quebec, Soprano and composer Emily Clements began music lessons when she was four years old. Clements is a coloratura soprano and contemporary opera composer who had her first workshop world premiere by Opera Las Vegas in September (22')
Clements is a recent graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with her Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance (21') under the direction of voice teacher and Opera director Dr. Linda Lister. Additionally, Clements studied under Dr. Jennifer Bellor for her opera- compositional-writing. She has continued her voice studies at the University of Mississippi.
Clements discovered her second passion for composing in 2018 after traveling to sing in two Young Artist Programs, performing in Little Women and The Ballad of Baby Doe. She was greatly inspired by Lister's Opera State of Grace world premiere. Clements has written and workshopped opera scenes, orchestrated, and arranged medleys for strings, harp, and chamber orchestra. She dreams of writing for companies such as Disney, The Met, opera, Broadway, and so on.
Clements found her speciality in writing for opera/musical theatre. "I loved writing stories growing up and once I found my love for singing and composing, it naturally developed into opera writing." Clements first opera Letters to Lily was inspired by the Stonewall Riots and LGBTQ movement. She believes the opera world should continue to progress and encourage companies to produce more works by women, LGBTQ, black composers, and all who are unrecognized and underrepresented.
